At the 2022 annual review press conference, Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) president Datuk Aishah said that 2,631 electric vehicles (EV) were sold last year in 2022.
Note that the figure does not include parallel imported units. Regardless, the sales figure represents a significant jump (860 percent increase) from the year before with only 274 units sold.

โ2022 was a big jump (for EVs) because of the zero percent tax (import and excise duty) incentives,โ said Datuk Aishah.

When asked by WapCar.my on the 2023 sales forecast for EVs, Datuk Aishah said, โWe have not forecasted the actual numbers for EVs, but it will definitely be much higher than 2022 because there are a lot of models that will be introduced and the fact that there is tax incentive will spur EV sales.โ

Last year, JPJ announced that there are more than 10,000 EVs registered in its database. That figure would include parallel imported units as well as other vehicle types including electric bikes that are registered throughout the years to the date of announcement.

While MAA did not provide the breakdown of EV sales by brand, we would hazard a guess that the BMW iX accounted for nearly half of the total EVs sold last year, having delivered over 1,000 units in 2022.

The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
