Malaysia will CKD a Mercedes-Benz EQ model in 2023 - first EV from Pekan 01

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has confirmed that it will be launching a new locally assembled (CKD) battery EV model next year.

“We are certainly working on localizing the EQ models. In 2023, we will announce our first EQ model that will be localized, so I ask you to stay tuned for that,” said Sagree Sardien, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, at the sidelines of the launch of the Mercedes-Benz EQE today.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s plant in Pekan, Pahang currently only makes one electrified model, the V223 generation S580e plug-in hybrid.

The company did not reveal any further details on the model earmarked for local assembly but up north, Mercedes-Benz Thailand is already producing the EQS at the company’s Samut Prakan plant.

India has started local assembly of the EQS. In October, the company's Pune plant is the first outside of Germany to produce the EQS.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia currently sells 5 fully electric EQ models, all imported from Germany:

Hyperscreen option not available in Malaysia

Malaysia currently exempts battery EVs from import tax, excise, and road tax until 31-December 2023. Locally assembled (CKD) battery EV models will enjoy the same exemption until 31-December 2025.

There was also a proposal to extend this by 1 year, under Budget 2023 but since the Parliament was dissolved just days at the Budget’s tabling, this proposal is yet to be passed, so the status quo remains.
