SUV sales in Europe saw massive growth during the first 5 months of 2021 and none saw such stratospheric gains like the Peugeot 2008. 87,674 units of the B-segment SUV were sold in the continent, contributing to a 143% growth compared to the same period in 2020 according to data by JATO.

That puts the 2008 as Europe’s best-selling SUV of the year so far. Last year’s best-selling SUV in the continent, the Renault Captur, slipped to third place in the segment with 72,282 units sold in the same period.

Trailing behind the Peugeot is the Volkswagen T-Roc with 85,213 units sold between January and May 2021.

In 2020, the Peugeot 2008 was the best-selling SUV in France and Portugal. With 156,458 units sold, the 2008 was also the third best-selling SUV in Europe last year.

However, it appears that the 2008 will take the crown from its French rival in 2021. As the European economy slowly recovers from the pandemic, more buyers are entering showrooms to get a new ride. Across the board, most carmakers are experiencing gains in sales with double or even triple digit growth.

Back in Malaysia, things are the opposite with the MCO 3.0 lockdown still in effect. As such, car sales in June are expected to be nearly zero with showrooms closed across the country.

Peugeot’s comeback would also see a bit of blowback. Despite being under a new distributor in the form of Berjaya Auto Alliance Sdn Bhd (BAASB), all plans for new model launches including the 2008 will be put on hold for the time being even if units were spied in Malaysia.

With it being Europe’s best-selling SUV combined with a more credible-sounding distributor, perhaps there is a chance for the 2008 to achieve some success in Malaysia when it finally arrives.
