The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is bound to reach Malaysia. A teaser was dropped by Hyundai Malaysia some time ago, and another one has been dropped to confirm that it will feature Hyundai’s new CVT-type transmission, the Hyundai IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission).
Hyundai’s IVT aims to simulate the driving experience of a car with sequential gears. 8 virtual gears are incorporated to avoid the typical CVT experience. Different from typical CVTs, a chain belt is used instead of a metallic belt.
The chain belt’s main selling point is that it uses the belt tension to adjust the pulley diameter, thus eliminating instances of slippage and improving efficiency in power delivery.
The chain belt also has a longer lifespan and is maintenance free, which makes it more reliable.
Hyundai claims that the CVT transmission has shown a 4.2% improvement in fuel economy and a 5~8% reduction in engine power loss on the 2021 Hyundai Elantra.
Besides the transmission, the engine has also been confirmed. The 2021 Malaysian Hyundai Elantra (CBU) will be powered by a 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine (SmartStream G1.6 MPI) with a maximum power of 123 hp and maximum torque of 154 Nm. The engine is similar to that of the Korean Hyundai Avante.
