Recently, news has surfaced that Mazda has trademarked the CX-50 nameplate, fueling speculations that the company is working on a CX-5 replacement model.

But is it true?

Sorry to burst your bubble, as companies have the tendency of trademarking a lot of names, but that does not necessarily mean that they will adopt these names on their new models. 

Although the rumour pinpointed the CX-50, Mazda also trademarked several other names, such as CX-10, CX-20, CX-40, CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90. 

Keep in mind that this is a normal trademark process, as it prevents complications if other manufacturers use a similar name. 

The CX-30 nameplate is currently fitted to Mazda’s latest compact crossover. Whether or not more SUVs bearing the CX nameplate remains to be seen.
