Joao Dias, the Principal Exterior Designer at McLaren since 2016, released a design sketch of a sexy-looking red machine on his Instagram with the caption “The world needs more red Mazdas.”
The sketch does draw similarities with the RX-Vision concept car, which was previewed 5 years ago. Long bonnet, front-engine sports car with presumably a rotary engine.
Typical of design concepts, the wheels are absurdly large and within them are equally massive Brembo brakes. There’s a Mazda logo on the front fender, similar to where Ferrari places the shield. The rear however, does resemble the McLaren 720S.
A user commented on the engine of choice to which Dias replied, “100% rotary inside!”
Rotary engine is expected to make a return to Mazda, but it may not be what you think. The rotary engine will likely be very compact and be part of a hybrid system.
It won’t drive the wheels directly. Instead, it will either be used a series hybrid where the engine only charges the battery or used as a range extender.
The rotary hybrid powertrain is one option, the other would be the straight-six engine that is currently under development. It has been reported to produce in the region of 350 PS. Still want that Supra?
The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
