The government will be conducting a study on the use of dashcam footages in court or any lawsuits as well as civil legal cases. Other than that, they are also considering making dashcams compulsory in cars.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that the use of dashcams to record accidents has been proven to be a useful tool for any individual to record an accident so that it can be used as evidence in any case.
This has prompted the government to start looking into the legal aspects, technical specifications, validity and so on to make dashcam footage valid evidence in a court case.
Even now, there are plenty of instances where dashcam footages of road users’ wrongdoings are used as evidence for the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to start investigations over the incident.
With the increasing use of dashcam footages, the government needs to take quick action to set a clear legal guideline and rules on the use of the footages.
The government is also looking to make dashcams mandatory equipment in cars, especially in newly registered vehicles, in the future as well but Wee claims that they will have to look further into the matter as they will have to take into consideration of the potential burden that will cause, especially to the B40 group.
But this will only apply to newly registered vehicles, existing vehicles will be exempted from the regulation if the ministry decides to enforce the rule.
When asked whether the government has plans to approach local car manufacturers like Perodua and Proton to make dashcams a basic accessory in every vehicle regardless of the segment after this, Wee answered that if all legal and technical aspects are ironed out, the Ministry of Transport might look into approaching both manufacturers to discuss the matter.
At the same time, Wee said that to his knowledge, there has yet been a study conducted on whether the use of dashcams has reduced accidents and crime on the road.
