The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has introduced three new safety guidelines for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) aimed at enhancing the efficiency of EV safety management in Malaysia.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the guidelines, which include the Road User and Public Safety Guidelines for EV Incident Management (MyEVIM), the EV High-Voltage Assessment Protocol, and EV Crash Test Lab Safety Guidelines, at MIROS's PC3 crash test facility in Melaka earlier today.
"MIROSβ unveil of Assessment Protocol and Procedure for High Voltage Electric Vehicles (HVEVs) under the ASEAN NCAP initiative, is more than a technical guideline; it is a statement of intent. It underscores our region's commitment to not just meet global safety standards but to lead the way in automotive safety innovation," he said.

He highlighted that the guidelines are straightforward for the public to understand, especially for taking initial precautions in the event of an accident or emergency involving EVs, as incidents could lead to explosions, electric shocks, or fires.
The guidelines are not only for Malaysia but are also intended for sharing with ASEAN counterparts, as MIROS is recognised as an outstanding vehicle testing center within the region.
"We hope that other road safety authorities across the region will adopt these guidelines to benefit society at large," he added. "Being publicly accessible, these guidelines can be viewed as infographics by scanning the QR code on the MIROS website, as well as on the Transport Ministry and Road Transport Department websites."
Meanwhile, MyEVIM stands to provide clear, actionable advice to manage EV-related incidents, guiding first responders ways to respond effectively to emergencies pertaining them. As for the Electric Vehicle Crash Test Laboratory Safety Guideline, it is to ensure that the crash testing facilities comply to the highest standards set by ASEAN NCAP for EV crash testing.
Loke added that the ministry would continue to collaborate with international bodies and automakers to improve EV safety standards in the region.
I write about cars, I take pictures of cars, I collect diecast cars, and I go home only to play with more cars online. If I'm not doing all these then I'm shovelling money into my 7th-gen Celica project, @twojetjet.
