Unlike neighbouring Indonesia, 7-seaters are not as popular in Thailand as buyers there prefer pick-up trucks. However, in this small market, there is one model that is on every Thai buyer’s mind – the Mitsubishi Xpander.
According to data compiled by Headlight Magazine, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand recorded 1,064 units of the 7-seater SUV sold in the first quarter of 2021. That accounted for 57.7% market share with March being the highest at 452 units.
Mitsubishi is quite dominant in the market as rivals in the segment couldn’t quite catch up. The Xpander is the only model to sell more than 1,000 units as the rest could only pick up sales in the 3 figures.

In 2020, the Xpander and its jacked-up twin, the Xpander Cross are the best-selling 7-seaters in their segment with 7,329 and 4,844 units sold respectively. If this keeps up, the Xpander will very likely maintain its top spot as one of Thailand’s best-selling 7-seaters in 2021.
The Xpander has certainly received quite a reception in ASEAN with the model snatching Indonesia’s best-selling car in May and even becoming the best-selling non-national 7-seater in Malaysia.
