After experiencing the second highest sales volume of 2022 in June, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported that the total of new car sales in July saw a 23 percent drop from 63,366 units to 48,922 units.
The dip is attributed to the end of sales tax exemption in June 2022 and the rush to fulfill bookings made before the deadline.
Out of the total sales for that month, 43,594 sold were passenger cars while 5,328 were commercial vehicles. The year-to-date number up to July 2022 increased 48 percent to 380,595 units compared to the same period in 2021 (256,677 units).
Although the number has expectedly dropped compared to the previous month, the sales number in July is by no means the lowest of the year. The number of cars sold in July still outnumbered the figures for January and February.
MAA also believes that the shortage of chips and components will continue to affect some car brands.
The association also expects car sales to maintain steady in August, as car companies continue to fulfil the backlog of orders made during the SST exemption period.
In case you missed it, even though the SST exemption has already ended, customers who booked their cars before June have up to March 2023 to register their cars to be eligible for the SST exemption.

The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle womenâs magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
