UMW Toyota Motor has reclaimed its position as the number one non-national car manufacturer in Malaysia after six years – a position that it lost to Honda in 2015.
In 2021, Toyota sold a total of 72,394 units, breaking their 2020’s record of 59,320 by 22 percent, with December recording a growth of 0.5 percent with 9,289 units sold. Month-on-month, Toyota surpassed the 8,487 sales volume for November by 9%.

That said, neither Honda Malaysia nor the Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) have yet to reveal Honda's sales performance for 2021, so it is possible for Honda to edge ahead of Toyota in passenger vehicle sales.
Toyota’s leadership currently extends across several categories, including the overall non-national, B-segment, pick-up and hatchback segments. The Toyota Vios remains as Toyota’s best-selling model, accounting for 31 percent of sales, while the Toyota Hilux is the undisputed best-selling pick-up truck in Malaysia since 2005. The Toyota Yaris is also the best-selling non-national hatchback.
“We would like to thank Malaysians and our loyal customers for their continuous support towards our brand and choosing Toyota as their preferred road companion. We are driven by their love and passion towards our brand. Despite the most of 2021 being a rather challenging year for most sectors, including automotive, the team at Toyota showed resilience by continuously innovating to offer only the best mobility solutions to our customers who are eager to get back on the road upon the lifting of the lockdown in August,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor, Ravindran.
