Former best-selling champ, Honda Brio, slips to number 7
RWD Avanza still a hit despite all-new FWD model introduced
Amidst all the chaos that is the year 2020, over in Indonesia, the Toyota Avanza’s title as the country’s best-selling car was snatched away by the humble Honda Brio. But some form of normalcy returns in 2021 as the 7-seater takes back its crown from the lil’ Honda.
Though that title isn’t really sealed as there’s still a month to go in the year, according to the latest sales data published by the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), the Toyota Avanza sits at the top spot pretty comfortably with 56,127 units sold between January-November 2021.
The total number of units include the previous generation as well as the upmarket Veloz variants. Recall that the all-new Avanza was launched in the archipelago in November, so the bulk of sales come from the rear-wheel-driven (RWD) predecessor.
In second place is another Toyota, the Rush with 48,207 units sold while the third most popular car in the country isn’t a car or 7-seater at all. It’s the Suzuki Carry commercial pick-up which sold 47,519 units.
Taking fourth place is the Avanza’s rival, the Mitsubishi Xpander which sold 45,306 units while rounding up the top 5 is the Toyota Innova which saw 43,408 units sold.
Indonesia’s best-selling car of 2020, the Honda Brio slipped a whopping 6 spots to be placed number 7 in January-November 2021. That drop was caused by the chip shortage and only 39,596 units were sold. However, all is not lost for the Brio as it held on the top spot overall during the first half of the year.
Other notable models that are in among Indonesia’s 20 best-selling cars of Jan-Nov 2021 include:
Toyota Raize (Perodua Ativa) – 20,449 units (12th place)
Daihatsu Ayla (Perodua Axia) – 20,159 units (13th place)
