When the new 2022 Proton X70 was launched earlier today, the headlining changes were the 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine. What not many people notice is the price hike from the pre-facelift model of a little over 4 percent.
Back when the locally assembled (CKD) X70 was launched in early 2020, Proton not only added more variants and features to the car but also dropped its price to make the C-segment SUV even more affordable.
As the X70 is locally assembled (CKD), the SUV was eligible for the full SST exemption when the government announced the special incentive as part of its bid to help revive the economy after the Covid-19 lockdown.
After the SST exemption, prices start at RM 89,900 for the Standard, RM 101,000 for the Executive, RM 113,100 for the Premium, and RM 115,800 for the Premium X.

These prices are only valid until 30-June-2022, so that means that they are prices sans SST. That makes the new X70 around RM 4,000 to RM 4,500 more expensive than the pre-facelift.

The reason for the price hike is most likely driven by the increase in materials and logistics cost, which is a direct result of ongoing problems with the global supply chain. Unfortunately for us, the supply chain issue doesn’t just affect Proton but all other industries, including food.
As mentioned, note that these SST-exempted prices shown are only valid if the vehicle is registered by 30-June-2022 (there is a one-month grace period though, until July 2022).
With the ongoing shortage in automotive parts, it is quite unlikely for buyers who place their order today to get their new X70 within this month.
