The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has confirmed that it is in the final stages of implementing the 30 km/h and 50 km/h speed limit in several parts of the Kuala Lumpur city centre.

MIROS Chairman, Suret Singh, made the announcement in a tweet confirming that the institute is working closely with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to properly implement the new speed limit.

Other than that, DBKL and MIROS are also in talks on the possibility of data and record sharing between the two bodies. This will mean that MIROS will have access to data such as CCTV recordings of traffic offences committed in the capital city.

The new speed limit standard in urban and residential areas, cities and villages is part of the national road safety plan for 2022-2030. It is also part of a bigger global road safety campaign known as the Stockholm Declaration.

Malaysia is one of 80 countries that pledged to halve the number of road deaths by 2030 by proposing the 30 km/h speed limit as the new norm in areas. These areas are specifically chosen as the number of users are largely made up of motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The proposal to adopt the 30 km/h speed limit standard was raised last year by the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to WHO’s data, mobility and road traffic volume had decreased overall because of Covid-19 lockdown measures in 2020.

Hence WHO’s proposal to all governments to urgently adopt the new standard as the world continues its recovery from the pandemic.

WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said that lowering the speed limit will not only help create a safer environment for road users but also help create healthy, green, and liveable cities too.
