The Mitsubishi Outlander debuted in the year 2014 and is now rather long in the tooth. However, a the replacement model is on the way and test mules have been spied testing since September 2019. As expected, now that Mitsubishi is part of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, the next generation Outlander will share platform with the next generation Nissan X-Trail.
According to a report by Japan’s Nikkei business daily, the next generation Outlander will be powered by a Nissan engine, a sign of deeper ties between the two Japanese manufacturers. Each clearly benefits from savings in development cost.
The other rumour has to do with Mitsubishi’s plug-in-hybrid system, as Nissan is smitten with the success of Outlander PHEV in Europe and North America The next generation Nissan SUVs is said to use Mitsubishi Motor's plug-in hybrid technology and the first model to get it will be the Qashqai crossover.
