- New-gen Proton Saga arriving in 2024
- Manual transmission almost certainly coming
- Likely still same P2 platform as the current model
After what seemed like an eternity without a new sedan in sight, Proton is developing not one, but two new sedan models.
The current-generation Proton Saga, codenamed P2-13A, has been around since 2016. It received its first major update in 2019, encompassing revised looks and a Hyundai-sourced torque converter automatic.

Moving forward, word on the grapevine is that Proton is currently working on a new generation model that's slated to arrive by 2024.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Proton has started work on the new generation A-segment sedan, with the project code starting with P2. Recall that the current Saga’s codename is P2-13A.
As reported in our earlier coverage, Geely's BMA platform is too costly for a budget model like the Saga. Other Geely sedans, like the Vision sedan, are too dated.
But that’s not all. The source also mentioned that the new generation Saga will still be fitted with a manual transmission – something that is becoming rarer and rarer today. Proton has dropped the manual option on the latest Iriz and Persona, and Perodua has done the same on the Myvi.
Now, this new generation model should not be confused with the white unit that’s been spotted running around town, which we’ve covered here and here.
While changes to this white model is unknown for now, whatever improvements that it gets will give the Saga another two years of life before the new-generation model arrives. Even so, it’s at the limit what more can be done to the Saga’s platform, which can be traced back to the Proton Saga BLM from 2008.
