The next-generation BMW 7 Series will be available as a diesel, petrol, as an electrified plug-in hybrid and, for the first time, as an all-electric model. BMW calls this “Power of Choice”.

In a statement made by Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said the BMW 7 Series will run a much more efficient fifth-generation electric drivetrain.

As with the previous BMW 7 Series, the model is considered as BMW’s flagship car. Naturally, any new technology or innovation will naturally be introduced with the 7 Series. Although further details were not mentioned, expect the electric powertrain is to have in excess of 600 hp with 850 Nm.

Zipse further adds that local mobility needs and legislation are so varied worldwide, hence ‘one model for the world’ method no longer works, so ‘different drive technologies will coexist alongside one another into the long term’ for better sustainability.

In line with BMW's future goals, BMW plans to have at least 25 fully-electric model on the road by 2023, with 30 percent of sales to come from the electrified variants.

The move is to be expected, as rival Mercedes-Benz will also be introducing a fully electric flagship sedan, previewed as the EQS. The BMW 7 Series is scheduled to go on production in 2022.
