Although a detailed report isn’t released yet, ASEAN NCAP has awarded the Nissan Magnite a four-star rating. Nissan’s entry-level SUV was quietly launched in Indonesia last month and so far, this is the only market in South East Asia where the Magnite is officially sold so far.
With its 4-star rating, that meant the Perodua Myvi is safer according to the safety body.

The Indonesian-spec Magnite is imported from India and Nissan has stated that the facility in Oragdam, Tamil Nadu will be the hub for Nissan’s newest entry-level SUV.
In Indonesia, the Magnite is available in three variants, the base Upper MT variant, and the Premium MT and Premium CVT variants. The Indo-spec Magnite appeared to be more upmarket than the Indian-spec Magnite which is available in five variants.
Slotting below the Nissan Kicks, the Indo Magnite is powered by an HRA0 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine. This is the same engine that powers the all-new Nissan Almera which produces 100 PS and 160 Nm.
As mentioned earlier, the Indo-spec Magnite is equipped with features including a digital speedometer, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, as well as a 360-degree camera. But it does lack on the safety front, which might be the reason for its 4-star rating.
The Magnite only gets 2 airbags and VSC while ADAS features are notably absent. This little SUV is designed primarily for developing markets and in India, demand for it is so great, its waiting list stretches past 8 months. Still complaining about not receiving your Proton X50?
Will the Nissan Magnite make it to Malaysia?
Speaking of local boys, the Magnite would easily be competing against the upcoming Perodua D55L SUV if it were to arrive in Malaysia. That being said, it’s unlikely for Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) to bring this entry-level SUV over here.
Their focus on the compact SUV market could rely more on the larger Kicks which could be launched in 2021. Check out our detailed guide here if you’re interested in Nissan’s rival to the Honda HR-V and Proton X50.
