Odd or hot? All-new 2025 BMW X3 debuts with new MHEV/PHEV engines, features and lights in places you never seen before 01

Munich’s busy year with updates and new models continues with this, the global debut of the all-new 2025 BMW X3. A ground-up redesign, new electrified powertrains, and the brand’s latest infotainment setup are some of the highlights.

Four variants are announced at its debut: the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) X3 30e xDrive, the X3 20 xDrive, the diesel X3 20d xDrive, and the top dog, the six-cylinder X3 M50 xDrive. Save for the PHEV (obviously), all engines are now mild-hybrids.

No more ‘I’ designation behind the model numbers too – it used to denote fuel injected variants, but it’s now reserved for battery electric (BEV) variants only.

Powertrains in the X3 include the brand’s familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, and with 48V mild-hybrid assist it makes a peak 208 PS. The diesel makes 197 PS.

Meanwhile, the PHEV X3 makes a total 299 PS, and is WLTP-rated to do 81-90 km on a fully charged battery. Juicing said lithium-ion unit comes through an 11 kW onboard charger.

The peak X3, the M50 xDrive’s 3.0-litre turbocharged six-banger makes 398 PS. It can do 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and comes with a load of M Sport upgrades (differential, electronically-controlled dampers, brakes, wheels) to keep it on the road.

All engines are paired to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

On the outside, the the X3 bares an altogether smoother look, though you decide if you love it enough. The new design language sees a large kidney grille up front which can be lit up if you tick the Iconic Glow option, and there’s also redesigned light alloy wheels and a new Dune Grey colour.

It’s a smidge longer and wider too. It’s 4,755 mm length and 1,920 mm width is 34 mm longer and 29 mm wider than the old model, and it’s 25 mm lower too at 1,660 mm.

Of course these can all be further enhanced with optional extras that range from Adaptive LED headlights, a list of colours, M Sport/M Sport Pro/M Shadowline packages.

Inside, the all-new X3 is a tech-laden affair. We’ll start with the standard stuff: BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel are mainstays with whatever variant you choose.

It also starts off with a richer spec than before. A three-zone air-conditioning system, acoustic glass, a boatload of ambient lighting, wireless charging, USB-C ports are all standard fitment.

BMW also debuts the latest BMW iDrive with QuickSelect with this X3, with it geared towards touch and voice control. Over-the-air (OTA) updates are available should you choose to buy apps along the way, while Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard.
