Old vs New: 2024 Geely Emgrand facelift - What changed? 01

It has been 3 years since the current fourth-generation Geely Emgrand was launched in China and a few left-hand drive (LHD) markets overseas. Hence, it is just about time a model of that age is given a bit of nip and tuck to remain relevant.

Geely officially released images of the new Geely Emgrand facelift which some in the Chinese media have speculated will be launched as early as this week. So what sort of changes will be given to the Chinese basis of the Proton S70?

Well, if the official photos posted on Geely reveal, nothing much has changed between the facelift and the pre-facelift at first. The overall designs are similar and based on the sales declaration documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information (MIIT), the dimensions are also retained.

In front, the new Emgrand gains Geely’s new silver corporate emblem on the waterfall-style vertical front grille. Looking at both cars side by side, the facelift receives redesigned L-shape chrome surround trims on the lower section. Apart from these two changes, everything remains largely similar in front.

Moving to the rear, the differences are almost non-existent with both the pre-facelift and the facelift Emgrands sharing the same designs. The clear taillight design and bumper trims are carried over into the updated Emgrand.

Though Geely has not revealed official photos of the interior, some units of the new Emgrand facelift have been delivered to showrooms in China. As seen in the photos published by Chinese automotive publication, Autohome, the interior of the new Emgrand is roughly the same as the pre-facelift with the main difference being the silver Geely badge on the steering wheel.

Many features in the Chinese-spec Emgrand facelift are likely to be carried over from the pre-facelift including the 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment head unit and a 540-degree panoramic view with transparent chassis for the higher variants.

Also likely unchanged would be the powertrain option with the Chinese Emgrand powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder that makes 127 PS and 152 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT-type automatic gearbox.

Malaysians are not likely to see this powertrain combo making its way here as the Proton S70 is only offered with a turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-pot unit (150 PS/226 Nm) hooked to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

The facelifted Geely Emgrand is expected to be launched in China by the end of the month. The outgoing pre-facelift Emgrand is available in 4 variants and is priced between CNY 69,900 and CNY 88,900 (~RM 45k-58k).

Back home, the Proton S70 won’t see any massive updates soon given it was launched in November 2023. Four variants are currently offered for Proton’s newest sedan model which are:

  • 1.5 Executive - RM 73,800
  • 1.5 Premium - RM 79,800
  • 1.5 Flagship - RM 89,800
  • 1.5 Flagship X - RM 94,800
