Following its debut in June 2022, the all-new 2023 (X254) Mercedes-Benz GLC now goes on sale in its home market of Germany, with other markets to follow.
Three variants have been introduced at the outset – all featuring mild-hybrids (MHEV) – the GLC 200 4Matic, 300 4Matic and 220d 4Matic, the latter 4Matic referring to their AWD powertrains.
Prices in Germany start at approximately EUR 57,631 (RM 260k) for the 200 4Matic, EUR 68,240 (RM 308k) for the 300 4Matic, and EUR 60,237 (RM 272k) for the 220d 4Matic.
Just to recap, the MHEV powertrains start with the base GLC 200 4Matic which is powered by a 2.0-litre inline-4 (204 PS/320 Nm). This is paired to a 48V generator which adds 23 PS and 200 Nm.
Next on the petrol MHEV range is the GLC 300 4Matic which is powered by a slightly more powerful 2.0-litre engine (258 PS/400 Nm) paired with the same 48V generator.
The plug-in hybrid powertrains (PHEV) due out in December 2022, will include the GLC 300e and GLC 400e 4Matic which is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder (204 PS/320 Nm) combined with an electric motor (136 PS/440 Nm). Add it all up and the top-of-the-range petrol variant produces 381 PS/ 650 Nm.
However, the highest torque output on the GLC 300de PHEV which sees the 2.0-litre turbodiesel and electric motor combined to give out 335 PS and 750 Nm. Though the diesel variants will likely not be offered in our petrol loving market.
GLC 200: 204 PS / 320 Nm
GLC 300: 258 PS / 400 Nm
GLC 300e: 313 PS / 550 Nm
GLC 400e: 381 PS / 650 Nm
GLC 220d: 197 PS / 440 Nm
GLC 300de: 335 PS / 750 Nm
All PHEVs will have an electric range of more than 100 kms (WLTP) and come equipped with a standard 11 kW AC charger, and offer an optional 60 kW DC charger.
All 2023 GLCs engines are paired to a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels.
On the suspension front, the X254 consists of a new four-link set-up for the front and a multi-link independent set-up on the rear. Airmatic air suspension comes as an option along with rear-wheel steering (RWS) on the Engineering package while PHEV variants come with rear air suspension and level control as standard.
In terms of trim, the GLC starts off with the Avantgarde package which highlights exterior and interior finishings for a touch of class, additionally, the AMG Line is offered with the GLC 300. A cool optional feature of the 2023 GLC is the Digital Light which features a daytime running light ellipses in addition to the familiar “torch” light signature.
The all-new 2022 X254 Mercedes-Benz GLC will be produced in three locations, Bremen, Beijing, and Sindelfingen.
For Malaysia, we can expect the X254 to arrive in 2023 and local-assembly (CKD) could kick off later. The W206 C-Class, for instance, made its global debut in 2021 with its Malaysian arrival in 2022 (fully imported, CBU), just under a year after it went on sale in Europe.
Arvind can't remember a time when he didn't wheel around a HotWheels car. This love evolved into an interest in Tamiya and RC cars and finally the real deal 1:1 scale stuff. Passion finally lead to formal training in Mechanical Engineering. Instead of the bigger picture, he obsesses with the final drive ratio and spring rates of cars and spends the weekends wondering why a Perodua Myvi is so fast.
