Only RM26k to convert, here's how to tell a cheap fake from a genuine Lexus LM 01

  • Lexus LM conversion kits are readily available, priced from RM 26k
  • Almost a 1:1 replica, but there are differences
  • Legit LMs are far and between

With prices touching RM 1.1 million, the Lexus LM is not a cheap MPV by any means. Which is also why some Toyota Alphard and Vellfire owners decided to convert their MPVs into the more upmarket Lexus LM.

These conversion kits aren't cheap

A quick check on several marketplaces reveal that enterprising sellers are offering a conversion kit for the Alphard and Vellfire to look like the Lexus LM. Mind you, these kits aren’t exactly cheap, as they cost anything from RM 25k onwards.

Looks like a real deal, eh? But this is a convert. Via: Akasia Garage

At such price point, one would think that the conversion job would be flawless, no? Well, not quite. There are ways to tell a converted Lexus LM from the real deal.

First and foremost are the legit LM’s 18-inch alloy wheels finished in hyper chrome metallic. According to Lexus, these wheels aren’t just for look, as they boast a noise-reducing feature. Replicas of these wheels probably won’t offer the same feature.

In fact, owners of the actual Lexus LM in Malaysia are unlikely to swap out their wheels, let alone modify one.

Then there’s the eye-catching chrome trim on the B-pillar of the LM. Regardless of which conversion kit that’s installed on the Alphard or Vellfire, it does not include this crucial identifying bit. The lack of the chrome trim is an easy way to tell apart the fake LM from the real deal.

A legit LM will wear number plate frames with Lexus Malaysia written on it

Another difference would be the number plate frame. As mentioned in our earlier recond vs official Toyota Vellfire article, the Lexus LM is fitted with the Lexus Malaysia number plate frame. Converted units aren’t fitted with this rectangular plate, instead, they are usually fitted with the Japanese format square number plate frames.

Also, colour of the Lexus LM plays a role. Lexus only sells the LM in two colours: White Pearl Crystal Shine and Black. If the Lexus LM you saw is any other colour, chances are that’s a convert.

You can convert, but it won't have the same air of luxury to it

If you’re unsure, the legit Lexus LM has a general majestic character and air of opulence to it. You will know one when you see one.

There’s just something about how the overall legit Lexus LM looks, compared to a converted job. Even if you can’t quite put your fingers on it.
