Reason why I bought this car

I've always loved wagons. Have previously owned a Mitsubishi Airtrek. As a family man, I wanted a car that could accommodate my family comfortably and safely for our regular inter-state trips. I selected the Subaru Outback for the practicality of extra space, symmetrical AWD driving dynamics, Subaru safety features, Japanese reliability & stylish wagon design.

Car selection process

  • I had a budget of: RM 200k
  • Models that I have considered include: Mazda 6 wagon, Volvo V60, Subaru Forester XT....

The reason why I choose this car

  • AWD for safer driving dynamics & control
  • go anywhere capability with its SUV ground clearance of 213mm & full time symmetrical AWD
  • spacious interior especially the rear passenger area
  • large car boot space
  • safety features & reliability
  • rare & unique

User experience

  • I have already done 120,000 km
  • My average fuel consumption is 11 km/L

Wished the Subaru Outback had a turbocharged engine like the Forester XT and it would have been great. I've test driven the Forester XT before and the power was addictive. However, other than the power performance the Outback out performed the Forester in every other category.

  • smooth CVT auto transmission
  • well equipped as a CBU unit with original 18" alloy rims, sunroof, factory leather seats with electronic control, high quality LED screen & reverse camera, tailgate power boot, traction control, etc.
  • safety (Subaru 5-star crash rating ANCAP/IIHS)
  • spacious & comfortable interior
  • large boot space (512-litre)
  • generally reliable with regular maintenance
  • two selectable driving mode (Sport/Intelligent) for sporty dynamic driving or economical driving

Cons

  • due to the alignment of AWD cars, find that the tires don't last, probably with a life of about 40,000 kms or so.
  • engine oil consumption issue after high mileage, could be a boxer engine issue
  • driver side wind noise when above 120kph
  • can be petrol thirsty when driven hard
