Owner Review: Great Value for Money, Bad Value for Time - My Proton X70 Executive CKD 01

Basic information about my car:

Proton X70 Executive, CKD, REG Aug, 2020

Reasons why I bought this car(purpose):

1. to replace my 6+ yr old Proton Inspira 2.0P (bought brand new Dec 2014)
2. my main car for commuting to work and traveling balik kampung etc.
3. have never owned an SUV before so a must try once lah since trendy also nowadays
4. practical since bigger loads can go in the boot

Car Selection Process

  • I had a budget of: 150K
  • Models that I have considered include: Mazda CX5 and Honda CRV
  1. top reason was value for money ie. money not wasted on CRV ridiculously costly and CX5 not turbo although beautiful
  2. looks and styling (rear qtr view is awesome)
  3. being Proton, perhaps maintenance cost is reasonable in the long run (this is my assumption for now)
  4. reliable - this is my current experience only. I am glad after 12 months, my car is running fine (touch wood lah)

User Experience

  •  I have already done 18,700 km.
  • My average fuel consumption is: 10-13 L/100km
  1. the car meets my expectation and happy to own one
  2. enjoying every minute driving it but too bad since too many intermittent MCO in the last 12 months hence cannot enjoy as frequent for out-stations trips
  3. A big concern is the spare parts. Waited almost 1 month for spark plugs (20K km service) and 3 weeks to replace absorbers to Geely’s absorbers. Factory fitted absorbers were noisy and many CKD owners faced similar problems
  4. Geely’s absorbers are stiff compared with factory fitted but got used to it after few weeks

Pros and Cons

Pros of my car

  1. love the power, the normal mode is good enough for daily travels. seldom use power or eco.
  2. NVH is good
  3. handling is pretty decent
  4. ride comfort
  5. spacious
  6. cabin is nice (god materials) and pretty
  7. so clear and big screen for the 360 camera
  8. value for money

Cons

  1. window button position is not convenience, should be 2-3 inch towards front (i hope you know what i mean)
  2. if only have one physical button access 360 camera, like X50
  3. push-start button view obstructed by steering-wheel, steering need to be tilted a bit when parking
  4. front seats are bit hard and bucket, not so thin people like me don’t fit in perfectly hence sometimes strain on thigh and back (lumbar) for long distance travels
  5. OEM GT Radial Savero tyres noisy after about 10K km usage

Summary:

After 12 months using the car, the experience has been a great one. I have no regret buying the car although some areas may need serious improvement ie Proton’s after sales. I also saved about 13K from opting out of the premium model because I do feel that I can live without the extra electronics. Driving in normal mode 24/7 is good enough for me. Car prices also are absurdly becoming higher and higher hence this car is indeed value for money.

Interesting Events:

Seldom used features:

1 Hi Proton - this feature for me is really redundant and I never got excited with it.

2 seat cooling function - the black leather seats do not really get hot and I think having good tinted shoes really helps too.

3 proton link apps - hardly necessary to use.

4 remote key tailgate press to open - you need to be closer to the boot then it’ll work, might as well press the button at tailgate to open.

5 sport and eco mode are rarely handy because I am okay with the normal mode, powerful enough for all driving conditions so far.
