The reason why I bought this car

This review is about older reliable car. Upgrading from Toyota Vios 1st model to a compact MPV, not planning to carry 7 person but more on personal favor and huge luggage space. I have option neither benefit for SUV interior or MPV to carry more than 5 if needed. It came with the same 2.4 DVVT 2AZ 4AT engine, dependable well known for various Toyota models, like Estima, Harrier, Camry etc.
For older car, i had more trust on Toyota due to reliability, less problem, many half cut parts and easy to maintenance.

Car selection process

  • I had a budget ofRM 20k - 30k and below with some cost set aside for maintenance.
  • Models that I have considered include: Toyota Innova, Toyota Harrier, Mazda Premacy, Nissan X-TRAIL

Reasons why I chose this car:

Having search the history, it was a RM 250k. Luxury MPV new price before, but now its below RM 30k. Anxious to own for comfort mid size MPV. Asking few related friends about parts the answer is no worries if you search at the right source. The height is good enough to drive through neighborhood area where has too many high hump, bump etc, no worry scratching your under, and sometimes when you need to drive through slight flash flood.

User Experience

I has found one on very good condition. I like the way getting in and out, it's spot on my liking, so easily slide in and out. After full refurbished done, I can say its worth it. Powered by 2.4 DVVT 2AZ 4AT produce 160Hp 221Nm. Gear shift is smooth and responsive. full of fun and leisure all-rounder car. Not too wide, make it easy to go anywhere and park. Amazed by its well-known engine and power delivery, the smoothness yet strong enough to fast overtake if needed. More feels like driving sedan car with higher seat and spacious leg room, also for passengers. Wont feel its 15 feet long and 1.5 tonne weight. Seats is on comfort zone, wont experience any aches after 10 hours of driving, feels like soft bucket holding you when hard cornering. For me all the set up was great and at the right
measures. higher seat means less blind spot around. Control is responsive, full corresponding on what driver wanted to do. On hard corner it feels planted and almost no body rolls.

Suspension was at the best setup, torsion beam coil spring rear suspension and strut coil spring front suspension for road holding and ride comfort enough at various kind of roads, close to stiff to appropriate with full load 7 person but when solo or 2 its feel stable.
The chassis stiffness plays a main role for overall stability of the car and it brings the drive-ability to another level. Climbing hills also a breeze, satisfy enough. NVH is on luxury level, wont hear any disturbing sound interior, exterior, engines what ever speed and style you drive it. Silky smooth power delivery.

Surprisingly still holds it solidness for it ages, no disturbing rattle what so ever. Compliment for air conditioning, has rear blower for passenger, fast icy cool even in hot sunny traffic jam. Safety equipment are basic as that year productions, it’s OK for me as i am a kind of full alert when driving. Stopping power the braking system includes Disk at the rear and Ventilated disk at the front. Tyre setup at 205 55 16R, the space is there if you want to set bigger rims and Tyre to look sporty, but for me the cost would be unnecessary.

Maintenance is just at basic, no fancy unsolved issues for this reliable engine and else. After spent estimated RM 7k for refurbished, I can say now its trusty go anywhere car. Toyota parts is well known for its long lifespan, so no worry for many year after done it. FC is on par or maybe a bit lower than Estima, Harrier, and a bit higher than Toyota Wish, for me its acceptable. Standard calculated around 10-12L/100km urban. I have install the auto tuned for air fuel ratio mapping system now its on same level as P2 Alza standard FC, calculated 7-10L/100km.
I was the inventor of the system, maybe in other review if WAPCAR admin would interested to know more. I do have dyno data result, I can assured its working.

Summary:

It was a great first impression. I expected many things from Xpander & so far, it delivered. Minor niggles aside, i had made the right choice. BRV may be faster but lacking in many other areas. Same story with Rush. Rush is safer but lacking, too, in many other areas. Xpander is the one that ticks the most boxes. Hence, the purchase. The waiting period is scary but in the end, it was worth the wait.
