Owner Review: One for the good family trips - My 2019 Mazda 6 Sedan (2.0 L Skyactiv) 01

Basic information about my car:

2019 Mazda 6 Sedan (2.0 L Skyactiv)

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

Reasons why I bought this car(purpose):

Previous family car was the Nissan Qashqai with the 1.2 Litre engine. As it was manufactured in the UK, the car was very heavy and the 1.2 L engine made it extremely uninspiring to drive. Being an SUV, the thick front A pillars created a huge blindspot and the tall riding height led to poor fuel efficiency. I reckoned the fuel efficiency was around 10 KM/L (very bad for a car with a 1.2L engine capacity). This led to our decision in changing our ride to a low riding sedan.

Car selection process

I have a budget of: SGD 120k - 140k

Models that I have considered include: Toyota Camry, VW Passat

Reasons why I chose this car:

Priced the lowest at that period. It also looks the best (subjective to individual) with a blend of elegance and sportiness. The soul crystal red was eye catching. Its low height really made driving it a breeze. Fuel efficiency is also good at around 12.5 KM/ L (though on paper it states around 14.5 KM/L.

User Experience

  • I have done: 46,000 km
  • My average fuel consumption is about 12.5 km/L

Though the engine isn't exactly punchy, it is powerful enough for overtaking. The interior is really nice and the seats are extremely comfortable. The soul red crystal paintwork is probably the most mesmerising to date. It is a rather long car which makes parking it rather difficult. We drove up to Kuala Lumpur during the second half of 2019 and stayed at the Parkroyal Hotel. I remembered we had a hard time getting the car parked due to the extremely tight space within the carpark.

Summary:

It is interesting to notice that there are more Mazda CX-5 s in Malaysia than Mazda 6 s while the opposite holds true in Singapore. It can be seen that drivers in Singapore still love their sedan. All in all, the mazda 6 is a good car and thankfully we got the last running model (there won't be a new mazda 6 after this current model).

Interesting Events:

About a month after our purchase of the car back in 2019, we made a trip to Malacca for a holiday in the Mazda 6. The jam was horrible (it was Good Friday) and we took about 3 hours to reach the Singapore side of the checkpoint (we took another 2 hours to cross over Johor). At Woodlands checkpoint, we opened the bonnet only to see the engine being overheated. Thankfully it did not compromise our road trip over the next few days. The plush rear seats did make the long wait in the jam more tolerable. I can foresee more road trips with the Mazda 6.
