2019 Hyundai Ioniq HEV Plus 102k

Reasons why I bought this car

To upgrade to a more reliable car with good safety features and saves fuel, as I travel a lot due for my work purposes.

Car Selection Process

I had a budget of: 100k

Models that I’ve considered included : Used 2018 Honda Civic 1.5T, Used 2018 Hyundai Elantra 1.6T, Kia Cerato K3 2.0

I chose this car mainly due to the promotion for the remaining stock from 2019, price went down from 115,888 to 103,888. And thanks to some connection I managed to get further discount of near 2k from a Hyundai Dealer. Its futuristic design, technology and safety features were what convinced me to choose the car over other models. I always hope to own a car that is less seen on the road, and therefore Hyundai Ioniq was the first choice when its price dropped.

User experience

• I have already done 20962km
• My average fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km.
• To my surprise, the handling is great with negligible body roll over sharp turns. The car responds instantly whenever I wish to pick up speed thanks to the hybrid system with combined torque of 265Nm, which allows me to overtake cars with more confidence. The cruise is always quiet and steady over high speed, I can drive effortlessly on highways with its adaptive cruise control and other safety features.

Pros of my car:

The HEV plus variant comes with full package of safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver's Attention Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Front Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Brake. Fuel economy is really good, even heavy-footed me can easily achieve below 5.5L/100km, city drive can easily get me below 5.0L/100km. The cabin is quiet, seats provide good support.

Cons of my car:

The cabin space is arguable small for a car with 2700mm wheelbase, and due to its coupe-like design for better drag coefficient, the head room for rear passengers is kind of limited too. The infotainment system is not stable, Sime Darby replaced the original head unit with a China made Android Head Unit, although it is android based, the vendor restricted users from installing 3rd party apps, which in the end can only support Waze and Spotify.

Summary :

I first learned about Hyundai Ioniq in year 2018 when I accompanied my friend to a Hyundai Showroom, I was amazed by the technology of the car, Wireless Charger, radar for AEB and adaptive cruise control. I personally liked its futuristic design very much, the full digital cluster, blue-trim interior, all left me very strong impressions.

I was driving a 2012 Toyota Vios 1.5 G, and there was no urgency for me to change car as it was functioning fine with no big issue. Until I came across the promotion of price discount while surfing Facebook, I started to consider changing my car. And I am glad I did, to own an Ioniq is a pure enjoyment. I feel the excitement to drive the car every single time since day 1.

I cared about not only driver's experience, but also the comfort of passengers, and that's what Ioniq delivers, it balances well between handles and comfort, while providing excellent power and saves fuel. Satisfied with the experience, I am proud to own an Ioniq, and would like to own another Hyundai Electric Vehicle in future.

Last:

I once lent my car to a friend who owns an F30 328i, feedback from him after few days was that my Ioniq drives well, and he likes the handling and power. But he is annoyed by the alert sound from the safety functions like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, well all I can say is every thing has 2 sides.

I was also very frustrated by the android head unit which has been restricted its functionality. But thanks to the power of Ioniq owners community, some owner managed to come out with a guide on how to bypass the restriction so that we can install 3rd party apps. Now my head unit supports Android Auto, Youtube and also playing videos through browsers, so I can never be bored by heavy traffice jam anymore.
