2011/12 Volkswagen Passat B7 (CBU)

Reasons why I bought this car:

I bought this car from a friend of mine with the reasons of reasonable price (can consider as cheap), it is a D-Segment sedan and with the necessary safety features.

Car selection process
- I had a budget of: RM 70k

- Models that I have considered include::Used Honda City Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid (FB), Nissan Teana

Reasons why I chose this car:

Price, modification and upgrades my friend had made.

- ECU Mapping Stage-1

- Brembo break disc rotor + pads

- Koni absobers

- 18" rims

User experience：
- I have already done: 15,000km
- My average fuel consumption is 8l/100km

I bought this car during MCO (Sept 2020) and basically i didn't really have chance to drive far during that time. When our government finally loosen the interstates travel rule, it was a very unpleasant and regretful experience that I own this car where a lot of parts starting to give problem. Roof liners started to drop, door panel leather peeling off, ABS sensors started to fail 1 by 1 and Oil separator value was torn. Now air-cond compressor giving me a weird sound and waiting for it to fail. The only pleasant things are car handling and comfortability. I'm not a heavy footed driver therefore, ECU Mapping Stage-1 doesn't really useful to me.

Pros of my car:

- Comfortability

- Handling

- Acceleration

Cons of my car:

My personal experience is the DSG is really terrible to drive when you are in the heavy jam. When the traffic is crawling, basically the gear will only change between 1st and 2nd gear and it create a very unpleasant feeling (it's not jerking but somehow a draggy feeling and sometime a very punchy feeling) compare to CVT or conventional 4/5AT smoothness. I really don't how much more time and money I need to spend on repairing it (especially time).

Summary

If I was given another chance to choose, VW + DSG definitely will not be my choice. I will definitely go for Japanese (Honda/Nissan) or even a Perodua. Of course a lot of people will easily say, so much complaints just sell it off but I only drove it for about 2 years (15,000 km), the resell value was out of mind. I'm not hunting for glamour by driving a conti car. What I need is a safety features and less problematic or predictable problems car. I do not want to waste time in sending my car to workshop and I do not have a second car to drive while repairing my VW. I'm the person who will maintain my car regularly but this VW just too unpredictable.

Lastly:

I went Taiping during 2022 Raya, had a puncture there and after got my tire repaired, one of the ABS sensor failed. I was driving to Ipoh and back to KL without all the safety features. My dashboard warning lights lighted up like a christmas tree. Every time, I start my car I always wonder what will fail this time.
