At the sidelines of the all-new D74A 2023 Perodua Axia media preview happening now (blue words are links to our first look, early impressions), the national carmaker divulged their plans for hybrid models, and the Axia will be quite a foundational piece of the puzzle.
Speaking to the press, Perodua's CEO, Dato' Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad shared that the latest Axia's Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform is capable of accepting a hybrid powertrain, though he stopped short of sharing further details.
Naturally, prices are another set of questions to be answered altogether, but Perodua is confident they can price it right. "In terms of pricing for hybrids, we have to do the study. Say for example we introduce hybrids in the future, it's going to be the cheapest hybrid in the country; that is our target," said Dato' Sri Zainal.
"Cheapest means most affordable, not compromising on safety and all that. We are still studying what's the best entry level for hybrids," he continued.
Perodua's first foray into hybrid vehicles is with the fully-imported (CBU Japan) Perodua Ativa Hybrid that was only available via subscription, in which all 300 units have been spoken for. It was introduced as a means for further studies on the powertrain and customer evaluation, among others.
Meanwhile, the soon-to-be-launched D74A Perodua Axia will first go on sale with the naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre 1KR-VE engine (68 PS/91 Nm), combined with a D-CVT automatic transmission. Estimated prices range from RM 38,600 to RM 49,500.
