Perodua may need a new, third plant to support series production of Myvi BEV 01

Perodua is mulling the construction of a new plant by 2025, to support series production of the next generation Perodua Myvi, which will include a battery EV (BEV) variant.

Currently, Perodua has two plants, both located in Rawang, adjacent to each other.

The older Perodua Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. (PMSB) currently builds the Alza, Aruz, and Myvi. It also does contract manufacturing for the Toyota Veloz.

The newer Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. (PGMSB) builds the Axia, Bezza, and Ativa.

The third plant is being referred to internally as the ‘BEV factory.’

At the same time, Perodua is keeping its options open. The alternative plan is to partner with a contract manufacturer.

Speaking at the public debut of the Perodua Emo-1 concept last week, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, “I cannot disturb the current factory. The current factory is running at over 300,000 units (per year). As I mentioned earlier, we are trying to produce about 340,000 to 350,000 units. That’s already exceeding our normal capacity. So, I cannot disturb the current factory. This (battery) EV is something we have to consider building a new factory, or we can also consider looking at partners, whoever that has the capacity in Malaysia to allow us to do the assembly.”

The Perodua Emo-1 (short for Electric Electric Motion Online, episode 1) is the first life-size concept car. It is the second of Perodua’s four ‘episodes’ of concept car debuts.

Emo-0 points to the design direction of next gen Myvi BEV, Emo-1 is a powertrain concept, upcoming Emo-2 will combine both

The first Emo (we shall call it episode 0) was a scale model previewing its design. Emo-1 is a powertrain concept, thus explaining why its exterior is still very similar to the current generation Myvi.

The third ‘episode’, Emo-2 will debut by the end of this year. Presumably, this will be a packaging concept that will combine both the design seen in the Emo-0 scale model and an improved version of the working powertrain seen in Emo-1.

The final concept (Emo-3), the closest to the series production car, will debut in mid-2025.

Emo-1 is trials powertrain packaging, like the Porsche Taycan-style H-shape battery aimed to solve the biggest problem with BEVs - poor seating posture for rear occupants

The next generation Perodua BEV is developed independently from its technical partner Daihatsu.

Starting from zero, the project is done with cooperation from local universities and UK’s electric vehicle conversion specialist EV North.

The project is led by chief engineer Puan Jehan Adnan.

Simultaneously, Perodua is using the prototype to upskill over 60 local vendors, ensuring that Malaysia has the necessary supply chain to support local manufacturing of BEVs, not just for Perodua, but also other makes wishing to do local assembly here.

Of the three main hardware used in BEVs – battery, inverter, high voltage cabling – Perodua is aiming to localize production of at least one of the three hardware components.

The specifications above are not final

The Perodua Emo-1 debuted with the following specifications:

  • Driving range: 400 km (targeted)
  • Weight: 1,400 kg
  • 0-100 km/h: 7 to 9 seconds (targeted)
  • Motor type: 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, front
  • Power: 120 kW (163 hp)
  • Torque: 315 Nm
  • Top speed: Over 150 km/h
  • Motor weight: 95 kg
  • Battery chemistry: Lithium iron phosphate (LFP)
  • Battery capacity: 57.6 kWh
  • Charging socket: CCS2, Type 2
  • AC charging: 11 kW, 3-phase input
  • DC charging: 50 kW

As this is still a prototype, the specifications above is not representative of the production car, which Perodua aims to put on sale by the end of 2025, priced under RM 100,000.
