For those shopping for a B-segment hatchback, the default option for many Malaysians is the Perodua Myvi.

The other alternative is the Proton Iriz, but we’ll get into that later.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Perodua Myvi’s pros and cons, as well as the estimated monthly payment to see if it’s the right car for you.

Pros and Cons

Headlining the Perodua Myvi is its value-for-money preposition. For a car that costs less than RM 53k, the potential buyer does get a fair bit of equipment, including LED headlights, six airbags, Perodua’s ASA 2.0 AEB suite, a built-in Smart Tag reader, and digital controls for the air-conditioning system.

Even the 1.3-litre variants are decently-equipped, getting four airbags in total. While the 1.3-litre variants of the Myvi loses out on curtain airbags (1.5-litre variants only), the 4-airbag count is still two more than 1.3-litre variants of the Proton Iriz.

Apart from that, the Perodua Myvi’s fuel consumptions figures are also commendable – Perodua claims that 1.5-litre variants of the Myvi can return up to 4.97-litre/100 km (20.1 km/litre), though most owners report fuel consumption figures closer to 5.88-litre/100 km (17 km/litre), which is still an impressive figure.

While the fuel consumption figures are impressive for what it is, the Myvi’s seats are the biggest sore point.

As mentioned in our earlier Dealbreaker article, the seats are too small for the average adult male. The front seat base and seat back are too short in length, resulting in poor thigh support for the driver. The shorter-than-usual seat back also means that the headrest ends up being more of a neckrest.

Although the rear legroom is rather generous, the rear seats share the same issue with the fronts – the bench is not long enough and the angle of the transitional part between the seat bench and seat back may be uncomfortable to some.

The Perodua Myvi’s closest rival, the Proton Iriz, has more comfortable seats, but at the expense of poorer fuel efficiency. The Iriz also lacks AEB features like the Myvi’s ASA.

How much does the Perodua Myvi cost to maintain?

Over a 100,000-km/5-year period, it costs RM 3,149 to maintain both the Myvi 1.3 and 1.5, RM 4,010.42 if one follows the ProCare package.

ProCare is a preventive service package that is offered by Perodua, which encompasses optional items such as air cleaner filter, brake fluid, tyre alignment and balancing, and major service for the air-conditioning system.

Not choosing the ProCare package will not void your warranty, but customers are encouraged to opt for these maintenance work to keep their Perodua in tip-top condition.
