Perodua maintains its No.1 position in 2021 despite a dip in sales
Proton's sales grew 4.5% in 2021
Perodua could still keep first place in 2022, but Proton is slowly catching up
Perodua has just released a detailed sales report of the models it has sold in 2021 and unsurprisingly, the Perodua Myvi holds on to its crown as the brand and Malaysia’s best-selling car.
Out of the 190,291 vehicles Perodua sold in 2021, the Myvi leads with 47,525 units sold nationwide. Those numbers include the 7,055 new Myvi facelift units that were delivered to their owners since the launch on 18-November.
Perodua also noted that a total of 31,154 orders have been made ever since it opened bookings in early November.
Taking up second place among Perodua’s best-sellers is the Axia with 43,080 units followed by its sedan twin, the Bezza, which sold 42,698 units in 2021.
The following is the Perodua’s sales figures in 2021 based on models.

Despite maintaining its position at the top and with a 37.4% market share, things were not exactly bright as Perodua failed to achieve their target for the year. For 2022, it aims to increase its market share to 40.6% by registering 247,800 vehicles against an estimated 610,000 total industry volume (TIV), the largest sales target Perodua has ever commit to.
So, how does this compare with Perodua’s “national” rival, Proton? The Malaysian Tiger reported that 114,708 units were sold in 2021, its highest closing figure since 2014. However, those numbers combined both domestic and export sales.
While Perodua saw 2021 sales slipping 13.6% compared to 2020, Proton saw sales growth of 4.5% over 2020 and this represented the third consecutive year of volume growth.
Proton has even strengthened its foothold in market share at 22.7% in 2021, an increase of 2% over the previous year.
While the Myvi holds the crown among Perodua models, it was the Saga that was Proton’s best-seller with 42,627 units sold. The A-segment sedan closed its gap with the Bezza in sales in 2021 but this figure includes exported units.
Proton’s second best-selling car in 2021 was the Proton X50 which sold 28,774 units while the X70 was the tiger’s third best-selling car with 16,735 units sold. It’s also worth noting that the two rebadged Geely SUVs allowed Proton to become the best-selling SUV brand in Malaysia, accounting for nearly 40% of total sales.
The following is the detailed rundown of Proton’s sales figures in 2021 based on model.

The Iriz’s 6,708 units sold in 2021 pales in comparison to the Myvi’s sales figures and in fact it sold less compared to 2020 (7,636 units). Would we eventually see the Proton hatchback reach 100,000 sales in its lifetime?
Still, perhaps Proton are focusing more on the success of its SUVs and the Saga. Speaking of the Saga, Proton’s best-seller could get an update in 2022 with perhaps keyless entry and a slightly smaller engine.
Proton has yet to release its outlook for 2022 but this year we might still see Perodua remain on top. Question is, can Malaysia’s best-selling automaker achieve its ambitious sales and production targets?
