Soaring fuel prices aside, it seems there is another worry looming and that is a shortage of RON 95. Several petrol stations in Kuching have reportedly run out of RON 95 to sell to their customers and road users in the city are forced to refuel the more expensive RON 97.
According to a report by Utusan Borneo, several petrol stations in the city have run out of RON 95 since Monday (27-June-2022). The newspaper also reported that RON 95 was still sold at RM 2.05 per litre.
Although it is not completely certain what is the cause of the shortage in RON 95, a petrol station worker believes that the rising demand is caused by the rising crude oil prices and the potential removal of blanket fuel subsidies.
However, road users who were forced to visit several petrol stations in search of RON 95 were told that the shortage was caused by a shortage of petrol truck drivers hence stations were not getting deliveries in time.
Just last week, it was discovered that many RON 97 users have switched to the cheaper RON 95 fuel as they too are feeling the pinch of inflation in necessities. Prices for RON 97 have hit an all-time high and have been holding at around RM 4.80 for weeks.
After hearing that Kuching has been hit by a shortage of RON 95, petrol stations in Miri are also bracing for the same issue. A quick survey by Wapcar revealed that road users in the city have also started panic buying RON 95 in case it runs out.
