Police: Restrict issuance of driving licences to senior citizens

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has suggested restricting the issuance of driving licences to senior citizens. The proposal was made in hopes to reduce the number of accidents on Malaysian roads.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Azisman Alias cited diseases such as Alzheimers and eye problems as among the health conditions of an elderly road user that would contribute to accidents.

PDRM’s concern over the increasing number of accidents caused by elderly drivers is not unfounded.

Previously, it was reported that at least two elderly drivers have mistakenly driven onto motorcycle lanes by mistake, while another case had seen a senior citizen crashing into multiple cars in a parking lot.

Azisman proposes that senior citizens over 70 years old should not be allowed to renew their licences for a five-year period. He also suggests that they should undergo a doctor’s examination to get a letter of confirming that they are fit to drive.
