Prasarana reported the highest public transport ridership number of 2022 in August. The total ridership last month was recorded at 21,670,739, which is 56 percent more than the number recorded in January 2022.
The numbers are helped partly by the opening of the Putrajaya MRT Line, the newly opened line recorded 579,156 commuters for August.
Although the number is lower than Julyâs 688,844 riders, Prasarana still managed to record the highest number of commuters in the year thanks to the overall rise in commuters across all its other services.
In August, the Kelana Jaya LRT Line alone recorded 5,491,587 commuters. The KJ Line remains the busiest train service despite the multiple breakdowns and complaints of long train intervals.
The second busiest train service is the Kajang MRT Line which saw 4,513,422 commuters while the Ampang LRT Line recorded 4,293,066 riders.
In contrast, the number of train commuters in February, the month that saw the lowest number of commuters, for the Kajang MRT Line only recorded 2,000,682 riders while the Ampang LRT Line welcomed 2,171,266 riders.
The KL Monorail saw the steepest jump in riders throughout the year. At the start of the year, the Monorail service recorded only 576,678 riders, the number dropped to 463,079 riders in February. Since then, the number of riders started steadily increasing to 1,059,131 riders in July.
The total ridership number also includes bus commuters. In August, the KL bus serviced 4,632,950 riders, the highest number of the year. Meanwhile, the Penang bus service saw 1,054,655 riders and the Kuantan bus welcomed 78,115 riders, also the highest number of riders of the year.
