Proton gains 2.2% market share for 1H 2021 while Perodua loses 2.5% 01

Based on the market share in Malaysia in the first six months of 2021 published by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), Perodua has seen a decline of 2.5% from 41.6% (full-year 2020) to 39.1%.  Meanwhile, Proton has gained 2.2% (from 20.5% to 22.7%) of the market share within the same period.

As for non-local car brands, UMW Toyota saw an increase of 2.5% which means as a group with Perodua, it still holds a market share of 52.7% (52.8% in 2020) in the first half 2021. Honda, Nissan, and Mazda saw a drop of 1.4%, 0.4%, and 0.1% respectively.

The changes in market share may not necessarily reflect buyers’ behaviour as it could be related to supply disruption caused by the global shortage of semiconductor.

Last week, Perodua announced that they have reduced their sales target by 10.8% to 214,000 units for this year from their earlier target of 240,000 units.

Earlier this year, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) revised its forecast for the total industry volume (TIV) in 2021 to 500,000 units from 570,000 units – a drop of around 12% - that was projected initially.

The nationwide lockdown from 1-June halted the automotive sector as it was not listed as an essential economic activity. Since 16-August however, automotive production facilities and showrooms have gradually reopened.
