Both the Proton X70 and Proton X50 have steered the domestic car maker to a fresh and new direction. Proton has actually registered a few interesting model names back in 2018, and one of them is the Proton V70 name.
If the “X” letter has been used to name crossover models, the “V” letter might just be used to name MPV or van-like models.
However, if we look at Geely’s model line-up, a possible candidate for the Proton V70 would be the Geely Jiaji, a C-segment MPV to replace the aged Proton Exora.
There are several engine options for the Geely Jiaji and we’ve managed to try the 1.5-litre MHEV version.
Other model names that have been registered by Proton are listed at the end of this article. Could the “S” name be for a sedan? Could the “C” name be for a hatchback? We don’t know yet.
Curiously enough, the “Proton X90” is nowhere to be found in the list. Is the "X90" name being processed, or will the “V" letter be used on a bigger SUV?
All we know at the moment is that there will be a new Geely-based Proton for 2021. Let’s wait and see.
