Proton X90 to debut as soon as Q2 2023
Touted to be Proton's first-ever hybrid
7-seater and 4 variants to be offered
After close to 2 years of spyshots, it appears that the Proton X90 is inching closer to its official launch in the near future.
According to various sources, Proton could debut the Proton X90 within this quarter.
As reported earlier, the Proton X90 could be Proton’s first-ever hybrid. However, unlike the Toyota Corolla Cross or Honda HR-V and their full-hybrid system, the upcoming X90 will get a 48-Volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) instead.
Proton did tease its electrified future at its own headquarters with an engine display. Tucked at its Gallery of Inspiration at the Proton Centre of Excellence is a display of a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with BSG (belt starter generator).
BSG is Geely's 48-Volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) system, not to dissimilar from Mercedes-Benz's own 48-V MHEV with an ISG (integrated starter generator). BSG allows for energy recovery during coasting (but no regenerative braking like full-hybrid), and it also allows for brief power assistance during acceleration. Unlike full-hybrid systems, MHEV cannot do standing start in electric power.
Combined system out for the Proton X90, according to Funtasticko, stands at 190 PS and 300 Nm. Power is expected to be routed to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Funtasticko also added that Proton is poised to offer 4 variants of the Proton X90: Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship – mirroring a similar arrangement as the Proton X50.
But that’s not all – the same source also mentioned that the Proton X90 could be offered in 6 different colours, namely Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Cinnamon Brown, Space Grey and Deep Marine Blue – the latter is a new addition.
