The CVT keeps the engine operating at its optimum rev range to maximise fuel efficiency. It also makes city driving a smooth affair. Since all variants of the Nissan X-Trail wears a set of relatively small 17-inch wheels, it helps with fuel efficiency as well.

Before starting the test, all tyres were inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure of 230 kPa for the front tyres, and 210 kPa for the rear tyres. The tyres are Continental CrossContact LX Sport measuring at 225/65 R17.

The X-Trail’s 60-litre fuel tank is filled up to the brim with RON 95 petrol using the ‘three-click’ method – have the fuel nozzle jump three times with 10 seconds between each jump.

Although we obtained 9.6 litres per 100 km for the Nissan X-Trail's fuel consumption, it may go up further as this is a 7-seater SUV and only the driver was in the car. As for the rated fuel economy of 7.5 litres per 100 km, we reckon it is achievable, provided a more sedate and smoother driving style with more highway mileage.
