Nissan X-Trail

The Proton X70 and Mazda CX-5 set the benchmark for build quality in the segment. Now, we’ll dissect the locally assembled Nissan X-Trail in terms of build quality and its features through the WapCar Ratings system.

Build quailty of the 2019 Nissan X-Trail

Build quality is passable, but certainly not up there with the Proton X70’s solidity. Paint thickness averaged in the 100s while panel gaps on the frontal area have a 1.5 mm discrepancy between opposite sides, penalizing the build quality.

The 7.0-inch infotainment system is Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatible. Speaker count is at 6 and offers decent sound quality.

The X-Trail is equipped with 360 degree view camera, powered tailgate with motion activation (though operation is slow and sounds rough), and chilled cup holders.

Safety equipment is generous. It gets 6 airbags, stability and traction control, plus a partial ADAS that includes Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning with Rear-cross Traffic Alert.

At the price of RM 145,888, the Nissan X-Trail 2.0L Mid offers good value for money given its equipment level, especially when compared to rivals like the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V.

Of course, the Proton X70 is still the value champ in this segment and has a more impressive build quality than the X-Trail. It’s a commendable effort from Nissan on the X-Trail facelift, but its competition have moved forward.
