Having enjoyed success as one of the most popular SUVs in Malaysia, the Proton X70 might just receive an update sometime this year.

According to our friends at Funtasticko, a facelifted Proton X70, dubbed the Proton X70 MC1, is in the pipeline. Mass production is expected to begin in the second half of 2021.

With the Proton X50 powered by a 1.5-litre TGDI engine and assembled in Malaysia, there is speculation that the 2021 Proton X70 MC1 would use the same engine too.

If you're having doubts on a 1.5 TGDI engine in the Proton X70, recall the X70 for the Pakistan market that had been tested extensively with the 1.5-litre turbo engine.

A possibility of the Proton X70 MC1 is that it will be based on the Geely Boyue Pro. Since the Geely Boyue Pro is a higher-end version of the Geely Boyue and not a facelift, we'll keep our minds open on how the X70 will turn out.

The two engine options for the Geely Boyue Pro are an updated 1.8-litre turbo engine and a 1.5-litre turbo engine.

Over in the Philippines, the Geely Boyue Pro is sold as the Geely Azkarra and is available as a 1.5-litre 2WD option or a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid (MHEV) AWD option.

Along with the Proton X70 MC1, Funtasticko also reports that the Proton Persona and Proton Iriz might retain the CVT.

Should the Proton X70 MC1 facelift be based on the Geely Boyue Pro? Let us know what you think.
