Since UMW Toyota Motor has dropped the Avanza from its website here, that could only point to the imminent arrival of its replacement. The all-new 2022 Toyota Veloz; as the Avanza's much more modern successor will be called in Malaysia, will need to be priced competitively to reclaim the seven-seater compact MPV segment. We whip out our abacus to try and estimate the price in Malaysia with some educated guessing.

In Thailand, the Veloz is available in two trims; the base Smart and the flagship Premium. They’re priced as follows:
- Toyota Veloz Smart – 795,000 Baht (~RM 102,570)
- Toyota Veloz Premium – 875,000 Baht (~RM 112,890)

Now, time to justify some of the reasoning behind the estimate we arrived at. We’ll be using the outgoing generation Honda BR-V as the benchmark for the numbers. The logic is that up in Thailand, the Veloz and BR-V are both imported from Indonesia.

Similarly, the BR-V is CKD in Malaysia while the Veloz will be produced by Perodua. Therefore, this would imply that the local taxes and duties can be cancelled out from the calculations.

Over in Thailand, the BR-V is also available in two trims; the BR-V V and the BR-V SV. Pricing is as follows:
- Honda BR-V V – 765,000 Baht (~RM 98,700)
- Honda BR-V SV – 835,000 Baht (~RM 107,730)

A little fingering of the trusty office abacus reveals a difference of 3.92 percent between the lower trims and a larger 4.8 percent between the flagship trims. Applying that difference to the BR-V pricing over in Malaysia lands us in the region of the following as an estimate for the Avanza/Veloz pricing when it’s launched here:
Estimated Toyota Avanza/Veloz pricing in Malaysia |
Variant |
Price (estimated) |
Toyota Avanza/Veloz base trim |
~RM 90,125 |
Toyota Avanza/Veloz premium trim |
~ RM 97,904 |

Now, bear in mind we could be really off the ball with these calculations and our office abacus hasn't been recalibrated for some time. So, take it with a pinch of salt but these numbers are a strong indication of the new Avanza/Veloz pricing once it's launched in Malaysia.
