Fans of Initial D, the story of a small-town boy trying to make ends meet by delivering tofu in a Toyota Corolla would be excited with the news that its successor has been adapted into a TV anime that will be released in 2023.
Created by the man behind Initial D, Ryosuke Takahashi, MF Ghost is a continuation of sorts and tells the tale of Kanata Livington, a protégé of Initial D’s protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara, as he makes his way up the ladder to become Japan’s Next Tofu Master. Of course, that’s not the real story as MF Ghost is set in a future that sees Kanata taking part in a race series called MSG MFG.
MFG remains one of the last safe havens of human-driven cars as autonomous cars have taken over the roads. Thanks, Tesla. The race series isn’t confined to just Japanese heroes like Initial D but foreign carmakers too.
As shown in the teaser that was released earlier this year, some of the cars that will be in the anime include the Ferrari 488, Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche 911 GT3, Nissan GT-R, and Kanata’s ride, a Toyota 86. Also, you may recognise the sounds being used are taken from the actual cars and that is what really makes this upcoming anime so special for petrolheads.
In fact, the sounds aren’t just restricted to the exhaust notes or the engine noises but also the opening and closing of the doors. Recording is currently underway at the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) test track in Shirosato.
According to Best Car Web, 8 cars that cost JPY 200 million (~RM 7 million) were brought into the track to have their voices or in this case, noises being recorded for the anime. The noises emitting from the car in the anime are legit and not taken off some audio library. Kudos to the production team for going the extra effort.
For now, though, the Japanese publication has revealed the recording for two of the cars that will be portrayed in MF Ghost. First up is the Nissan GT-R Nismo which is driven by Kanata’s rival and supporter, Shun Aiba in the series. Shun is a hot-headed driver who is known for being aggressive but also tends to make mistakes like overheating and misjudging the wear of his wheels.
The second car unveiled by Best Car Web is the Porsche 911 GT3 (991-gen) which is driven in by Ishigami Fuujin. He is the reigning MFG champion and is considered very experience but old-school. Hence, the choice of a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive (RR) 911 GT3 in the competition.
Initial D was a seminal manga and anime when it was introduced 2 decades ago. Many drifting and Japanese car fans were born thanks to the series. Could MF Ghost introduce the essence and joys of driving a new technologically-savvier audience?
Traded advertising for a career that fits his passion for cars. Enjoys spotting cars during his free time and has a soft spot for Japanese Kei cars but drives a thirsty manual sedan.
