Say goodbye to inferior Euro 2M diesel in Malaysia, Euro 5 is the sole grade now!

Euro 5 diesel is set to be the sole diesel grade sold in Malaysia, starting today, April 1, 2021. This means that Euro 2M diesel will be phased out completely from the pumps. This was announced by the Environment and Water Minister, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Initially, the deadline given to the industry to phase out Euro 2M was on Sept 1, 2020, but on June 10, 2020, the Cabinet decided to postpone it to April 1, 2021 due to constraints faced by the industries as well as the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This move is also in line with the Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Properties) Regulations 2007 and the Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Properties) (Amendment) Regulations 2021.

Curiously, BHPetrol and Caltex are now offering both B7 and B10 biodiesel options of their Euro 5 fuel. No word on Petronas, Petron and Shell as of now, which still lists B7 as the only option. Compatibility concerns aside, this is great news for owners of diesel vehicles, as Euro 5 grade diesel is cleaner for your car and the environment, with a much lower sulphur content of 10 parts per million (ppm) versus Euro 2M's 500 ppm.
