Despite buyers' preference to 7-seaters and hatchbacks over sedans, the all-new D92A 2023 Toyota Vios was launched in Indonesia ahead of Malaysia last week. However, that launch wasn’t just the end of the fourth-gen Vios’ tale in the archipelago.
At a virtual press conference shortly after its launch, Toyota’s Indonesian distributor, PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) expressed interest in offering the Vios Hybrid in the country.
Speaking to the Indonesian motoring media, TAM’s Marketing Director, Anton Jimmy Suwandi said that Toyota would be committed to introducing more hybrid models into the country as the company is committed to electrification.
“Toyota isn’t just going to offer a petrol-powered Vios. We are currently conducting studies and requesting our principals to introduce more hybrid models into Indonesia including the Vios Hybrid,” says Anton.
Still, OtoDriver has reported that the development of the Vios Hybrid in Indonesia is still up to the principal decision from Toyota HQ. The Indo automotive publication speculates that the Vios Hybrid’s powertrain would be similar in technology to other Toyota hybrids such as the Corolla Altis Hybrid.
The D92A Vios sold in Indonesia is fully imported (CBU) from Thailand as opposed to the previous generation’s local assembly (CKD). 3 variants are offered and are powered by a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE petrol engine (106 PS/138 Nm) as seen in the Perodua Myvi.
The engine is paired to either a 5-speed manual or a D-CVT that sends power to the front wheels. Speaking of Perodua, Daihatsu’s Malaysian partner has a hand in developing the all-new Vios which is underpinned by a DNGA platform similar to the Toyota Avanza/Veloz/Daihatsu Xenia/Perodua Alza.
This is why you might see some familiar parts that you would also see in a Perodua model. That said, given the all-new Toyota Vios to likely be locally assembled in Malaysia, its arrival won’t be so soon as more time is needed to prepare for CKD production.
