The term special edition gets tossed around more than the village bicycle these days. So colour us a little sceptical when Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC) announced the availability of yet another special edition Ford Ranger XLT Plus.

Creatively dubbed the Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition. More importantly however; and perhaps to drive home how special it is, you can’t actually buy one yet. You can however place a booking.

In fact, display units will only hit Ford showrooms nationwide starting 10 March 2022. If you’re keen to get a peek at it before that, there’ll be a unit on display at Queensbay Mall in Penang from 24 to 27 February 2022.

Now let’s delve into what makes this Ranger deserving of the “special” suffix. If you see one approaching in your rear-view mirror, the new Ford Block-Letter front grille design will surely convince you to get out of the way. The fender flares are more pronounced and the sports bar has been redesigned as well.

Step into the impressive cabin and you’ll initially be greeted by the new illuminated front scuff plates sporting the Ranger logo.

Next up is a in-built digital video recorder (DVR) for the front. It’s HD capable with a wide-angle view. To reduce glare, there’s also a polarised filter. Syncing it with your phone is made easy via the Mobile App connect and is friendly to both Android and Apple smartphones.

That’s… pretty much it. Consider this an exercise in clearing stock before the new Ranger makes its way here soon.

Nonetheless, the Ranger XLT Plus is very much one of the most well-rounded pick-ups.

It’s powered by the same 2.0-litre single-turbo inline-four diesel that delivers 180 PS and 420 Nm of torque to the wheels via the 10-speed automatic transmission.

Lest we forget its extensive suite of driver assistance tech that includes hill descent control, hill launch assist, ABS with EBA and EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorage points, stability control with traction control, Rollover Mitigation, Trailer Sway Control, Adaptive Load Control and Ford MyKey.

There’s also the electronic shift-on-the-fly 4x4 switch, electric power steering and a limited slip differential. The Easy Lift Tailgate is a blessing and the SYNC infotainment system is an impressive setup to interact with the truck.

It’ll be priced at RM 136,888. For comparison, a “regular” Ranger XLT Plus goes for RM 131,888. Is the additional RM 5,000 worth fender flares, a fancy grille and DVR? That’s on you.

Eventually, once the Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition is launched, you can have it in either of these five shades; Absolute Black, Aluminium Metallic, Arctic White, Lightning Blue and Meteor Grey.

As with the entire Ranger line-up, it comes with a Ford’s new five-year manufacturer’s warranty or 160,000km, whichever comes first.

That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
