Ahead of Chery Malaysia's revival here, the company has commenced exports of the Wuhu-made Chery Omoda 5 and Chery Tiggo 8. These imported (CBU) cars are for showroom display; customer cars will be assembled at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah.

Both models made their public debut earlier this month at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 and are scheduled to launch here as soon as June 2023.

Speaking of CKD, Chery Malaysia has signed with Inokom to locally assemble the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro. Chery Malaysia also plans to establish research and development (R&D) centres for regional testing, as well as training and parts distribution centres here.

In an effort to further cement themselves as a brand committed to Malaysia, Chery Malaysia has plans to build 70 showrooms across the country.

As a brief recap, the Chery Omoda 5 is a Honda HR-V / Toyota Corolla Cross-sized crossover. Power comes from a turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that does 156 PS and 230 Nm, mated to a CVT-type automatic. Chery also plans to introduce the Chery Omoda 5 EV in Malaysia in the near future.

The second model is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. Positioned as a Proton X90 rival, this 7-seater SUV gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that dishes out a healthy 250 PS and 390 Nm. Like the X90, the sole transmission option is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
