In 2017, Bugatti set the land speed record for production cars with the Bugatti Chiron, achieving 0-400-0 km/h in a mind-boggling 42 seconds.
Seemingly not satisfied with the achievement, the French coachbuilder decided to attempt the (previously) unimaginable – breaking the 300 mph (482.80 km/h) barrier.
The record-breaking run was done in a pre-production version of a Chiron derivative – Chiron SuperSport perhaps? It was on Ehra-Lessien high-speed track where Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace hit the magic 300 mph mark on the 8.8 km straight.
“I went at full throttle from the start for approximately 70 seconds. It was important for me to be out of the bend at 200 km/h in order to reach top speed on the straight. That required the very highest level of concentration,” says the new record-holder.

By the end of the run, the Chiron proudly holds the title of the first hyper sports car to break the 300-mph barrier and set a new TÜV-certified speed record of 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h).
The world record Chiron is not exactly bone stock. Technical details were not available at press time but visually we could tell it has new aero work, rear spoiler delete and new exhaust outlets. Presumably allowing the car to slice through the air more efficiently.
Michelin has also come on board to develop reinforced tyres that have been tested to 511 km/h on a rolling road specifically for this record run.
In stock form, the Chiron possesses a peak output of 1,500 PS and 1,600 Nm from its 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine. Sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h takes 6.5 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to a bonkers 420 km/h (261 mph).
