Looks like testing for the Opel Mokka in warm climate conditions is still underway, as the B-segment SUV was spotted cruising around Kuala Lumpur near Bulatan Pahang.
Unfortunately for Opel fans, this still doesn’t mean that the Mokka will officially go on sale in Malaysia. We have still yet to hear about Opel appointing an official distributor despite the possibility of the SUV getting assembled in Stellantis’ newly acquired plant in Gurun, Kedah.

In case you missed it, when Naza exited the motoring business, Stellantis, the new company established from the PSA and Fiat Chrysler merger, obtained full ownership of the Naza Automotive Manufacturing (NAM) plant.
Stellantis will be using the plant in Gurun as the company’s regional hub for Southeast Asia. This explains why we often spot new Peugeot and Citroen models that are not officially on sale testing around Malaysia, especially in Kedah.

Back to the car, the Opel Mokka is a sub-compact (more commonly known as B-segment to Malaysians) SUV based on the PSA Group’s Common Modular Platform (CMP), the same platform as the Peugeot 2008.
Other than the platform, the Mokka also shares the same 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that churns out 130 PS and 230 Nm as the 2008. For the Mokka’s case, the engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed conventional automatic.

Like its French counterpart, the Mokka also has a fully electric version that does 136 PS and 260 Nm and a range of 338 km based on the WLTP cycle.
Don’t be too disappointed that this car won’t make it on sale, because the Mokka’s French cousin will be coming to town. Bermaz Auto Alliance (BAA), the new distributor of Peugeot cars in Malaysia, has plans to launch the Peugeot 2008 as soon as early 2022. That’s still something to look forward to.
