SUKE contractor and subcontractor fined RM 180,000 over crushed Proton Saga incident

Remember the incident where a Proton Saga was crushed under a parapet that fell off the construction of the SUKE highway on MRR2? Investigations have been completed and penalties have been dished out to the main contractor and sub-contractor of the project. Both parties were fined a total of RM 180,000.

The main contractor of the project, MRCB Builders Sdn Bhd, was issued a penalty of RM 80,000 while the sub-contractor, Makna Setia Sdn Bhd, was fined RM 100,000 for failing to ensure the safety of the construction area.

According to the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the contractors were penalised under Section 34B(1)(c) and Section 34C(1) of Act 520 Construction Industry Development Board Act.

CIDB’s investigation has also discovered that the subcontractor did not follow the correct standard operation procedure (SOP) and have hired a site supervisor with no accreditations.

Other than the fine, the sub-contractor of the SUKE project has also been instructed make serious improvements to the safety procedures at the construction area including sending the employees at the site, site supervisor and construction managers for accreditation.

Back in September, photos of a parapet on top of a badly crushed Proton Saga and videos of the badly traumatised lady driver started circulating on social media. Fortunately, the driver in the Saga was able to escape from the incident alive with minor injuries to her arms.

This has prompted the Work Ministry to order CIBD to start an investigation into the matter resulting in the fine of both the contractor and sub-contractor of the SUKE project.
